Book AppointmentWhat Is Low-Level Light Therapy (LLLT)?
Low-level light therapy (LLLT) is also known as photobiomodulation. It is a noninvasive medical procedure that uses LED light to stimulate cellular function and promote healing.
LLLT delivers precise and controlled beams of light at specific wavelengths, which trigger photoactivation. The light is absorbed by your body’s cells, which stimulates energy production to enhance various cellular functions, including promoting healing and reducing inflammation.
What Does LLLT Treat?
LLLT can be used to treat a variety of skin and ocular conditions, including:
- Reducing inflammation
- Reducing the appearance of wrinkles
- Improving skin tone and texture
- Managing acne and rosacea
- Enhancing wound healing and reducing the appearance of scars
- Reducing the appearance of sun damage
LLLT treatments have been used for dermatological and other medical purposes for some time now. As the treatment is seen to repair damaged or compromised cells and enhance the function of normal cells, studies have been conducted to investigate the effectiveness of LLLT for those with dry eye. It has been shown to decrease the severity of dry eye symptoms and improve comfort.
How Does LLLT Relieve Dry Eye Symptoms?
Many of the common causes of dry eye, including meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) and blepharitis, are related to inflammation and poor cellular function.
In cases of MGD, individuals experience blockages of oil or inflammation that prevents them from producing the oil layer of the tear film. Blepharitis is the inflammation of the eyelids, which can contribute to MGD and poor tear production from the lacrimal glands.
LLLT can be used to reduce inflammation on the eyelids and around the eye area. It can also improve blood circulation and promote healing, which can help support healthy tear production.
